Aninda Bose’s latest single is a cover with a curious story. Entitled Tumi Robe Nirobe, this blissful acoustic track is a modern reimagination of an antique hit first penned at the end of the 19th century, and composed in the Bengal language.
But you don’t need to speak Bengal to fall in love with this song’s mood. Serene and spiritual microtonal melodies dance atop a sparse and thoughtful soundscape, tapestried with strings, woodwinds and classical guitar motifs, creating a haunting, lullaby-like ambience steeped in wonder.
This culture-crossing performance features US vocalist Aninda Bose, Moldovan cellist Tatiana Kritskaya, Indian guitarist Shomu Seal and Ukrainian flutist Dr. Andrei Pidkivka, in collaboration with Indian music producer Ajay Singha, and is released via the US label Bongo Boy Records.
Tumi Robe Nirobe originally comes from the mind of Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), a man perhaps best known for winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. He composed Tumi Robe Nirobe in 1895 as “an expression of silent, eternal companionship,” which now speaks across the centuries. Its title translates to “You shall remain in silence,” its lyrics exploring “the metaphysical space between presence and absence — a contemplative ode to love, stillness, and spiritual connection.”
“This is not just a song,” says Aninda Bose, “but an attempt to imagine what Tagore may have dreamt — not just for Bengal, but for the world. It is music beyond borders, and emotion beyond language.”
It’s a masterful means of honouring Tagore’s legacy, rich in timeless emotion and sentimentality, all whilst resurrecting Tagore’s long-lost lyrical wisdom for a modern audience to sink into and enjoy. Its English-translated lyrics are well worth a read, too.
