Portland, Oregon-based artist Bleary is a ten-year veteran of the music industry. An unfortunate and nearly tragic head injury caused him to reconsider his life’s path, resulting in committing himself to his music aspirations full-time. He’s fueled by his desire to share his hardships and experiences with his audience, in hopes that he can serve as an inspiration for both new and old listeners alike. His most recent release along this journey is a single titled Weeknight, and it does not disappoint – this is a song that radiates artistry and dedication to the craft of songwriting and production.
Dripping in reverb and a slow but unquestionably smooth rhythm, Weeknight is a wonderfully eclectic combination of genres. It has all the swagger and style of a modern R&B track mixed with a sort of electro-alt-pop melody, not to mention the particularly hip-hop-esque delivery of the verses. While this might seem like irreconcilable genres, Bleary brings these vastly different sounds together effortlessly to create something that is wholly unique and artistic. It’s never disjointed or chaotic, no – it’s an easy and effortless foray into a wildly complex composition.
We especially appreciate all the small details in this track that show Bleary’s particular attention to production detail – the high-low octave vocal layers in the chorus, the simple and tasteful guitar licks that fade in and out, the understated bassline that keeps the song steadily marching forward – these are the elements that bring this track together, the little ties that take this composition to the next level.
For those looking for something outside of the box – something grandiose, with big, dynamic sounds and no fear of pushing boundaries or dealing with conforming to expectations, Bleary will be right up your alley. Weeknight is an expressive and powerful work that is as intriguing as it is inventive, and we expect it will resonate with fans of more genres than not. Check it out for yourself below and see.
