Bongo Boy TV Season 13, Episode 07 begins with “Crazy” from Nashville’s Athxna. And unimpressed with her boyfriend’s behavior, she enacts revenge through methods perhaps unhinged (like friends donning threatening ski masks, for example). This electronic pop offering starts with almost teasing vocals, but moves into more familiar fare with a danceable beat and Athxna’s lilting, seductive singing.

From Uganda, it’s Sydney’s Guard with “Sense of Direction.” Featuring white, dancing silhouettes over strobing ring backgrounds, “Sense of Direction” is based on a solid electro-African beat accented with percussive synth glitches, splashes, and horns. It’s immediately catchy, and therefore a significant distraction when one wants to type, but can’t deny the need to dance.

Next up, it’s Baltimore, Maryland’s OnnaDi with “Keep a Smile.” Relaxing, dancing, and singing in what appears to be an upscale (maybe international?) resort, OnnaDi sings in a seductive whisper with autotune-shaped bends and flutters. I’m getting a tropical/exotic vibe here, and a powerful urge to experience the world outside my local borders.

Say hello to Lissa Coffey and David Vito Gregoli with their latest track, “Krishna Govinda.” Passing on the electronics for more organic, acoustic instrumentation, “Krishna Govinda” features a captivating, vulnerable female vocal and visions of Indian women dancing in a manner both celebratory and ceremonial.

From Atlanta, GA, it’s Miss Lady Blues with “Good Woman.” And from the first notes, and first notes sung, you can tell “Good Woman” is heartfelt, soulful blues with more subtle, less artificial beats. Miss Lady Blues, sometimes adorned with blue hair highlights, sings, dances, and experiences love with the perfect partner in this catchy slow-dance ballad.

Hailing from Los Angeles, CA, it’s Barry Keenan with “The North Country.” Featuring lyrics over weathered film projecting vast, natural, and subtly sepia spaces – presumably the North Country – “The North Country” is a spirited, no nonsense, in-the-dirt country rocker that aspires to go where life is perhaps harder, but infinitely more meaningful.

And wrapping up this independent micro-music fest, it’s Chicago’s Mercy Alu with “African Queen.” This renowned ensemble creates modern African music with subtle electronics, authentic, infectious beats, and indigenous, waking-from-the-veldt vocals. And throughout this gorgeously sung ceremony, we witness the hand-wrung colors, the starkly lived in and unlivable lands, and more importantly, the people of Africa. It’s a blessing, a resurgence, and a cultural celebration; it’s something you feel close to while living a thousand miles away.

But is it good?

If mainstream music isn’t doing it for you, and you’re searching – tirelessly – for fresh and more soul-aligned sounds, then I have to, once again, point you to Bongo Boy Records and the latest episode of Bongo Boy Rock n’ Roll TV. It’s an immediate, one-stop, new music experience that will turn your boredom and near cynicism to hope and happiness. If you’re looking for something to replace several hundred homogenous and uninspired Spotify playlists, I can’t recommend this collection enough. Take a listen – you’ll thank us later.
