From Hanover, PA comes solo artist, Brenden Starr, and his ultra-modern brand of alt-rock/pop. He has recently released the EP Hopeless Romantic and we will be taking a look at one of the singles from this record, Gravity. The EP was created alongside engineer and co-producer, Hayden Calhoun (Dark Side Audio Studio), who is credited with guitars/bass/programming. Starr performed the vocals and drum parts.
Gravity has a tremendously big sound and balances shades of light and dark. It is built around a melancholic four-chord progression that is colored by dramatic changes in instrument texture. Just when we are feeling comforted by its soft, drum pad sounds and clean, reverberant guitar lines, Starr and Calhoun flick the switch and inject some heavy metal into the mix. All of a sudden these sweet layers are replaced by chugging, distorted guitar riffs and bombastic, headbanging drums. Starr shows an incredible vocal range and unleashes a performance that has passion, sincerity, and power in equal measure.
Starr has made a brilliant choice working with Calhoun for these songs. Gravity is a brilliant cut and it serves as a wonderful primer for the flawless songwriting and production that is abound on Hopeless Romantic.
