Who is Dom Scott? Why, Dom Scott is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actor, and the star of several Broadway plays, most notably the lead character Drew from the incredibly successful Rock of Ages musical. So, when he shared his latest single, “Fadin’,” we knew the music would be, in a word, awesome. And…we were right.
Wait. What’s “Fadin’” about?
Per Dom, “I think many of us have been in some kind of relationship where the love has started to feel sour. In fact,I know I’ve been in a relationship where I’ve thought to myself, ‘Ooh… this is bad. I would probably be better off walking away from this.’ And, for whatever reason, I kept coming back. They talk about being with someone through ‘the good times and the bad times.’ This song playfully tests the idea of ‘okay, well HOW BAD are we talkin’?’”
So…what makes it awesome?
“Fadin’” is modern, mildly electronic dance pop that rubs shoulders with familiar boy band fare (which makes sense, considering Dom also created the tribute group/show, Boy Band Review). It’s a catchy, kick-drum-beat-led affair with tight, percussive bass, subtle guitar scratching, and bouncing electronic vibes.
Scott’s voice is clean, of an innocent emotive quality, and fully capable of bending, weaving, and shifting between full voice and falsetto. And at 28-seconds in, we hear a Queen-inspired, layered and phasing harmony punctuating the word “heeeeere” (or maybe it’s “neeeeear”). It’s a great production call-back, and Scott pulls it off masterfully.
Overall, this is an immediately catchy track with an excellent, grooving, pulsing bridge, some refreshing key exploration, and right back to the equal parts sad/comedic, celebratory but self-aware chorus.
But is it good?
This is an enjoyable, catchy, adroitly performed/produced, bouncy, comfortable-in-its-warm- pop-slippers track that cracks a smile while suffering the familiar, stomach-wringing “will she/won’t she” dynamic. But in this case, the sufferer also asks, “Will I/won’t I survive this,” and more importantly, “Do I really need to tolerate this?”
So, turn it on, enjoy the comedy/drama of human romance, sing along without a care, and don’t you dare stop dancing. Recommended.
