Irish singer-songwriter and one-man-band Fergal Nash from Limerick, Ireland is back with a brand new single, Diego – and it comes with a vivid backstory, spurred by a songwriting challenge.
Tasked with composing a piece about a non-musical celeb, Fergal picked out the late football icon Diego Maradona. Why? In Fergal’s own words, it wasn’t “just for the brilliance he showed on the pitch, but for the humanity and fragility behind the icon. Diego is my attempt to capture both the light and the shadow in his story — the genius and the struggle, the legend and the man.”
And Fergal Nash captures this perfectly – vocals tinged with autotune suggest human imperfection beneath this solid-on-the-surface song. Honest lyrics bear the truth, the song’s slowed pace crystallising the contrast between the inspirational star and his inner torments.
Samples of football fans cheering bleed into Fergal’s acoustic ballad; an exquisite intro which places you on the pitch to taste a dash of Diego’s glory. Soft Lennon-esque vocals line Fergal’s acoustic guitars, the songwriter verging on the melancholies of country music while retaining a striking sense of honour and homage to the Argentine football star. But just wait until the bass drops in the final half, where Fergal channels the grit of contact sports into his sound.
