Frank Migliorelli and The Dirt Nappers have just dropped their fifth studio album, Abnormal Conditions – a ten-track rock/pop collection infested with blues, prog rock, and reggae numbers so wild the record almost feels punk in some places.
Singer/songwriter Frank Migliorelli is joined by guitarist Thad Debrock, drummer Tom Seguso, bassist Tony Tino, keyboardist Daniel A. Weiss and backing vocalist Sheryl Marshall; with guest appearances from Tania Elizabeth, Marshall Crenshaw, Soozie Tyrell and Lisa Lowell, and mastering by Scot Anthony at Storybook Sound.
After an album-opener that sounds like a fresh cut from the ‘60s, “Year of Living Dangerously” picks up a zesty indie rock edge; its fresh and funky Brit pop sound comparable to the likes of Kasabian. The folksy, fiddle-laced ballad, “She’s Been Waiting Forever,” time-travels back into Beatles-esque acoustics, reimagined with a country edge and an almost sci-fi electric piano solo.
The psychedelic Americana track “Michigan” erupts into an unexpectedly comforting soft rock anthem ringing with an uncanny sense of familiarity, even for first-time listeners. “Ever Since You Went Away” dives in even further – another flashback hit which sounds as if it were plucked from an older, better era, perhaps a Top 10 hit from a parallel universe’s 20th century.
“Fire Road” sees Frank Migliorelli and The Dirt Nappers give “political commentary on the abnormal state of the world we are living in” with a dynamite glam rock effect, before the angst is wiped clean with the hypnotic acoustic number, “The Rain Will Always Fall On This Side Of Town.” The album’s longest track, “The Whiskey Won’t Burn,” reveals the album’s most emotional twist, its five minutes dedicated to atmospheric worldbuilding and heart-stirring storytelling that holds you captive till its very last breath.
From its feel-good anthems to its lush, softer states, Abnormal Conditions thrives on sketching out summer moods sparkling with sing-along choruses and timeless simplicity, creating a record which feels instantly familiar; an automatic go-to album which slots easily into the sound of your life-long favorite artists on any classic pop playlist you’re curating.
If you’re a fan of Donovan, late-career Beatles, The Jam or any other artists along those lines, Abnormal Conditions is bound to become one of your top albums of the year. Our final verdict? Highly recommended.
