G Clef Fusion is back with another wildly creative release. The pseudonym for Chuck Moyer, G Clef Fusion has recently released a number of EPs that allow Moyer to experiment with unconventional and inventive music arrangements on a smaller scale than a full album. Today we’re taking a closer look at Pattern Recognition, a five track project that explores arpeggios and sequences.
Pattern Recognition is a decidedly texture-heavy work. Arpeggios by their nature create more movement than playing a chord does, and the layers of quick and contrasting sound create a very immersive listening experience across the board. The tracks are performed exclusively by synths, allowing for a wide variety of sounds to be incorporated across each track, creating soundscapes that range from futuristic and high-octane to stately and regal. And in typical G Clef Fusion style, each element is truly intentional and completely conceptualized. Moyer’s description of the opening track Escher’s Mind stands as true testament to the thoughtful nature of his work: “Like the great artist’s work, this song has a repeating and circular sequence; an overlay of a 4, 8, 7 and 14 beat patterns that all reset to zero every 21 measures as the underlying rhythm of the song.“
One of the EP’s highlights comes at its conclusion. Spring’s Fall steps a bit outside the norm of what we’ve come to expect from a G Clef Fusion work. It’s heavier and more foreboding than the preceding tracks, with droning low bass tones and an eerie melody at the foundation of the arrangement. There’s a simplicity to it, allowing the airiness of the main synth guide the listener through several complex movements that Moyer tells us represent the perspectives of each season on the ending of spring. It’s as well thought out as it is stirring.
Here at The Ark we listen to work from musicians from around the world, and there are few that are creating music that is as innovative and original as what G Clef Fusion is doing. Truly seeking his own musical fulfillment and the expansion of his own abilities in his work, Chuck Moyer is absolutely unafraid to jump into uncharted and unexpected waters and create wholly original music, and Pattern Recognition is another strong indicator of his abilities.
