From the ever-adventurous musical mind of G Clef Fusion (a.k.a. Chuck Moyer) comes the quirk-clad new EP, “With Dark And Light” — an enigmatic, genre-defying release forming the tenth installment of Moyer’s “Experiments and Explorations” EP series.
Five solo piano pieces journey like a stream of consciousness, from the spookily serene straight through to bright and lightweight jazz ambiences, capturing the happily hectic atmosphere of a bustling coffee joint.
Minimalist and meditative streams of melody rush like waterfalls, scattered with grand and mystifying jazz chords evocative of Debussy. Upbeat oddities resound like classical musicians slaying an impromptu circus gig; disjointed rhythms melting into free-flowing cascades of lush harmony, breaking chaos like sunlight piercing through an ice storm.
Track three, “Outer Rim Galactic Alien Network,” is a stand-out addition — a lone organ piece nestled amidst four piano compositions. It’s like listening to a space-age Dracula perched at the prog organ, twined with pop/rock riffs that could have been plucked straight out of the 60s; flowering with cosmic dissonance; anthemic as an abstracted, Gothic hymn.
It’s one thing to title your album tracks as acronyms for the instrument they’re based in. It’s another to abandon the concept of “genre” entirely, transplanting musical visions against a backdrop of silence, unrestrained melodies free to crawl and sprawl like the bristling undergrowth of an unstepped forest floor.
