Australia’s accomplished, award-winning pianist and composer Galliano Sommavilla returns with “A Kind Heart” – a piano-led instrumental taken from an earlier collection and re-recorded/remastered to properly celebrate World Piano Day (which occurs on March 28th, or the 29th if subjected to a leap year). Is “A Kind Heart” the sort of classical/emotive new age goodness prevalent in Sommavilla’s earlier works? Let’s talk about it.
But first, an interesting song fact:
“A Kind Heart” clocks in at 8:08, a clever nod to the 88 keys of a full-size piano.
Talking about it….
“A Kind Heart” begins with acoustic guitar, piano, and fluttering woodwind over a quietly oceanic, choral-like synth pad. When the introduction ends, deep strings assert a musical foundation beneath the song’s main melodic piano theme.
As the song progresses, we hear the occasional heavenly vocal, a gentle bass, and another sort of vocal synth that pervades the music’s relaxed, enveloping demeanor.
At about 6:26, this dreamily-paced piece gains percussion, and that floating vocal synth, formerly a supportive instrument, is now the leading melodic line asserting itself as the song’s final and everlasting refrain.
And when the music prepares to end, it’s joined by subtle guitar notes, Sommavilla’s nimble piano key twinkling, and that lead, lighter-than-air vocal synth continuing onward, perhaps repeating its aching refrain to infinity. (It’s as if the song simply floats away, slowly putting distance between its graceful, wind-powered self and the comfortably land-lodged listener.)
But is it good?
It isn’t just music; it’s a place – a living dream – that music creates. Once again, Galliano Sommavilla surrounds us with something delicate but powerful, aching but healing, and lighter than any imposed burdens. Ultimately, it’s a soothing aural antidote to what emotionally ails us. If you’re ready to swap this common, grounded existence for something gorgeous, loving, and unbound, I highly recommend this very track, and any of Galliano Sommavilla’s spiritually rewarding catalog.
