Gina Marie and the Golden Bucks – Pastures of Plenty

October 25, 2024 The Ark of Music Leave a Comment

We first heard Gina Marie and the Golden Bucks back in May 2024, when they introduced the title track “Pastures of Plenty.” From that moment, it was clear that this band was bringing something truly special to the table. With their deep appreciation for Americana roots and the heartfelt storytelling that comes with it, their debut album has not disappointed. The complete collection of tracks takes listeners on an authentic journey through the rich landscape of American music, from the Great Plains to industrial cities, with every note reflecting years of careful curation.

The album opens with a tribute to Woody Guthrie’s “Pastures of Plenty,” immediately setting the tone for the record’s homage to working-class America and its history. It’s a powerful introduction to Gina Marie’s expansive vision. “Where the Blue of the Night Meets the Gold of the Day” showcases Edgar Gabriel’s fiddle and John Rice’s dobro in a breathtaking duet, layered with Gina’s three-part harmonies. It is a perfect example of how the Golden Bucks reimagine early jazz with mid-century country influences. Then there’s “Snake Around,” an original composition that carries a rebellious rockabilly feel, celebrating the crossover between punk and Americana with a raw, driving energy that feels uniquely Chicago. “Aaron Harris Blues” slows things down with a longer, bluesy number that dives deep into the struggles and triumphs of everyday life, while “Feet Don’t Fail Me Now” brings the tempo back up with its lively rhythm and spirited energy.

Every track on Pastures of Plenty feels like a glimpse into America’s musical past, but with a fresh and modern interpretation that’s easy to get lost in. From bluegrass to western swing, jazz, and rockabilly, the album keeps its pace varied and engaging. It is clear that each song has been carefully crafted to represent a specific region or time in American musical history, all while maintaining a cohesive sound that is distinctly the Golden Bucks.

The band itself is a talented collection of musicians with a rich history behind them. Gina Marie DeGregorio, the bandleader, has been a prominent figure in Chicago’s early jazz scene for years. After overcoming vocal injury and surgery, Gina emerged with a stronger, more versatile voice, which she uses to bring a depth of emotion to every track. Backed by an impressive lineup, including Brendan Frank on electric guitar, Edgar Gabriel on fiddle, Elias Broxham on bass, and John Rice on acoustic guitar, mandolin, and dobro, the Golden Bucks have an undeniable synergy. Their ability to blend various genres while allowing each instrument room to shine is a testament to their individual and collective expertise.

The journey that brought Gina and the Golden Bucks together is as fascinating as their music. After years of touring and working with various artists, Gina reconnected with American roots music, finding a new passion in vintage jazz and early Americana. The pandemic may have slowed their progress, but it never stopped their creative momentum. Now, after years of dedication, the band has finally released a full-length album that captures the essence of their musical evolution. And with their upcoming show at Hey Nonny in Arlington Heights on October 30, it’s clear that the band’s live performances are something not to be missed.

The Golden Bucks have created something more than just an album – it’s a collection of stories, each one reflecting the heart and soul of the working class, the wide-open plains, and the music that has shaped this country. It’s an album that pays tribute to the past while forging its own path, and Gina Marie and the Golden Bucks have solidified themselves as a band that honors tradition while boldly moving forward.
