The Twin Cities Minnesota electro-pop music scene just can’t seem to shut-up…and we are glad.
Graveyard Club is our latest gold nugget from the Midwest’s Graceland. Born out of founders Matthew Schufman’s (vocals, synths) and Michael Wojtalewicz’s (guitar) common love of 80’s pop music, (as well as other shared interests which just happen to include a mutual digging of Ryan Gosling’s band, Dead Man’s Bones), the two joined forces in 2013, and soon after, recruited Cory Jacobs (drums) and Amanda Zimmerman (bass, vocals) by the Spring of 2014.
Their latest single, Diamond City is from their 3rd studio project Cellar Door. The track is impressive from the very first chord. The synth and guitar, the rhythm, the vocals, are all placed perfectly. But that’s not what we love most. We love the song’s mystery. We love the angst, the confusion, the questioning…and how it’s all wrapped up into a perfect therapeutic package, which, true to the art, offers no answers…
“There is a glowing light up in the pitch black sky
I’m so much older now, I never wonder why
the young leave first in this river town
And the dark spreads out like a wedding gown
And they say the sky is falling
But it don’t come true
Frances says a diamond is forever
Night is falling can’t you feel it darling?
Night is falling I can always hear it calling.”
If you happen to investigate Graveyard Club’s library beyond Diamond City, you’ll quickly discover a collection of authentic, heartfelt electro-pop songs. Electro-pop—dare we say—as it was meant to be. No throw-away songs. Each with an ax to grind. Each with something to say. It’s just really good stuff.
Whose lovechild..?
If The Cure and Depeche Mode created an electro-pop super-group and recruited Coldplay’s Chris Martin to sing a bit…the end result would be something very similar to Graveyard Club. (Yes, we are aware of the accolades, and we do not feel it is overdone.)
