Canadian singer-songwriter Karen Morand comes from a musical family, which set the stage for a long and fruitful career. She’s released quite a bit of music over the last decade with her current project Karen Morand & the Bosco Boys, including Carry On (2012), I Think I’ll Lose My Mind Today (2014), Junkyard Heart (2017), and Every Flash of Light (2018). as well as an upcoming project titled Ghost Hotel set for release in early 2022. Her most recent single is titled Never Enough, and it is a resonant battle cry in the face of adversity, capturing the challenges of love and addiction in an elegant, authentic way.
Born out of a songwriting challenge, Never Enough is a true folk-rock ballad in its execution. With Morand’s soulful, soaring voice at the center of the production, it’s set beautifully on a bed of gentle rhythms, complex vocal harmonies, and delicate electric guitar. The track has a compelling build from a soft intro to its powerful final chorus, and it also features a clean and tasteful guitar solo at the halfway mark.
The songwriting, no doubt, is the real highlight here. This song thoughtfully explores the difficulties of loving an addict, a bonafide challenge. Without ever honing in on one specific addiction, it’s almost too easy to imagine personal struggles that so many of us have had with loved ones as we’re guided with intention and understanding through the track by Morand. The second verse has a set of particularly poignant lines that are practically universal:
“Do you hear me begging you to stay
When the day has got the best part of you?
and you go and hide yourself away“
Never Enough is the kind of modern folk track that will really grab ahold of listeners and, in the words of Morand herself, “[break] their heart a little and [put] it back together“. This is high-level songwriting executed with clear musicianship that allows each piece of this track to come together to form a true musical masterpiece. Karen Morand & the Bosco Boys are creating the kind of folk-rock music that this genre could use a whole lot more of – meaningful, genuine, and from the heart at every measure.
