We’re excited to find another marvelous single from Atlanta-based artist Katie Belle in our hands. We reviewed two works from Katie last year, singles Was and Out Tonight – both tracks we enjoyed immensely for their fun, simplistic electro-pop sound (in fact, we loved the latter so much it ranked at #2 on our 2019 Top Ten Singles list). This year Katie is back with a brand new single and more of all of the elements that keep her on our artists-to-watch list. Released due to high demand from her fans, this is Carrousel.
Carrousel is both reminiscent of what we’ve loved about Katie’s previous work but also showcases her development as an artist. The bright bell-like tones over a deep mix of modern pop instrumentation feel like a carnival has met a dance club. It’s both familiar and fresh in execution and performance.
Katie’s voice shines here and is a high point of this track from the first measures, her crystal clear vocal tone carrying a hint of longing. The song tells the story of a cyclical, difficult relationship that’s turned into a ride that’s impossible to get off. We especially like the song’s opening lines:
“What goes up always crashes down, right here on the battlefield.
I just want to stop going round and round, we’re going round and round like a carousel.
And I can’t take the way you break my heart in two, I can’t escape, my worst mistake was loving you”
This is quintessential, catchy, modern pop music at its finest, showcasing what is becoming trademark Katie Belle simplicity alongside a well-crafted song and perfectly matched production. Katie’s music once again feels like it could stand aside any of your favorites on today’s Top 40. Carrousel is thoughtful, beautifully melodic, and expertly executed on all levels. Katie has hinted at more music possibly coming later this year, and we’ll be anxiously awaiting the next release from this brilliant pop songstress.
