Here The Ark, we are long-time fans of Atlanta-born pop artist Katie Belle. We loved her single Back to California so much that we ranked it #3 on our Top 10 Singles of 2021. To our great excitement, we’ve got our hands on another exquisite single of Katie’s – and Daughter gives us a look into a more emotional, vulnerable side of her as an artist.
While much of Katie’s work is danceable, infinitely catchy pop, Daughter is a deep breath of pensiveness and heartbreak in the middle of her catalog. Led by a gentle piano but strongly featuring strings and a modern rhythm section, this single bears strong resemblance to a Taylor Swift track in both its structure and execution. There’s a great build here, starting slowly and gently, soaring to a powerful peak at the bridge, and landing softly back down on the other side.
The effect of this thoughtful, tasteful production is that it highlights an absolutely stellar vocal performance from Katie. Her voice has always had compelling warm and sweet qualities, but in this track we’re treated to a more evolved richness. It has a tenured and experienced feel to it that both radiates authenticity and sells the song’s message wholeheartedly. The bridge at 2:56 is the best example of this in the track – intricate, gritty, raw, and moving.
And the song’s message, like so many other of Katie’s tracks, is something that will resonate with so many. The story of a young, painful heartbreak is a tale as old as time, but there’s more depth on display than superficial reliability in this single. When we arrive at the hook, the thought-provoking, cut-you-to-the-core line “God I pray you have a daughter” is absolutely chill-inducing. It’s a heart-wrenching, powerful sentiment that may well be Katie’s finest work to date.
The official video for Daughter (below) is a stunning cinematic complement to the intensity of the track. It’s already collected well over 100,000 views in two months – no doubt an impressive feat. But this emotional, inspirational song deserves far more. We once again find ourselves wildly impressed with the quality, musicianship, and raw talent on display in Katie Belle‘s work, and it seems as though it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the world catches on and catapults this incredible artist into the stars where she belongs.
