One of our all-time favorite pop songstresses is back with another verifiable hit. We first heard of Katie Belle back in 2019 with the release of her single Was, and in the time since she has released a number of exquisite works, each with her brand of sweet modern pop sounds. Her most recent release – single Back to California – takes a laid-back approach, giving us a recognizable blend of catchiness and simplicity that has come to define Katie’s music.
Featuring rapper Corleone, Back to California is a perfect archetype of the summer song. Katie has joined forces with renowned producer and songwriter Josquin Des Pres for this release, and his knowledge and experience combined with Katie’s skills and talent have proved to be a dynamite combination. Breezy and relaxed but still uptempo, Back to California radiates carefree, fun-loving energy that is absolutely infectious. Katie’s honeyed vocals have a hint of smokiness to them here, but still a saccharine soprano over Corleone’s baritone voice, whose smooth, deep tones provide a welcome balance to the track as a whole.
One thing we’ve always enjoyed about Katie’s music is its accessibility, and this track is another brilliant example of it. Though Katie was not a writer on this track (songwriters include Josquin Des Pres, Jean Castel, Haley Morrissey, Fabien Renoult, and Anthony Montes Fisher), its lighthearted, relatable writing fits incredibly well within her current catalog. And she sells the lyrics to us effortlessly, promising long drives with the windows down and easy, uncomplicated love – and we fall for it hook, line, and sinker.
It’s absolutely no surprise that Back to California is already racking up thousands of streams, and is well on its way to thousands – if not millions – more. This piece of pop perfection would make an excellent addition to nearly any summer playlist. And with Katie Belle‘s constant continued growth as an artist, we have no doubt that the sky is the limit for this endlessly talented performer.
