Austin, TX music-maker Kimberly Jean makes it all sound effortless. Her classically beautiful voice sounds like something you might find on some old, cherished record from the 40’s. An adventurist and explorer by nature, Kimberly’s travels so obviously inform and inspire her music, which drifts—once again effortlessly—across a multitude of genres, including Pop, Electronic, Folk, and even what what she calls Alternative Dream Folk.
We stumbled across her electro-pop single Levels of Love some time ago now. And, like all great music, the track was immediately gripping…an instant, permanent feature on our SoundCloud playlist.
Raw and basic in its composition and production, Levels of Love bares only drums, organ, and a few layers of Kimberly’s sultry vocals, with which she makes her plea…
“baby, maybe it’s insane, the way I like to chase the pain
but you have to play the game, to climb the levels of love
and it’s a fight to test my height, sometimes the way is far from bright
but every step will shine a light, on levels of love
and I can’t stop, I’ve got to climb to the top
levels of love
I feel the fear, I feel the fear
I feel the fear, In my grip
You pull away, and I slip
on your levels of love
on your levels of love”
Levels of Love sounds like the most excellent Trip-Hop group, Morcheeba, went back in time to the 30’s or 40’s to make music. There is a profound canyon of contrast that exists between the seriousness of this track’s subject matter—and the light simplicity of the music behind it. It’s like this: The words say stay. The music says go. And, in a world composed and bound in this very contrast, Levels of Love is instantly timeless.
