When his band, Kuikawa, wasn’t available, Koakane called on fellow musicians Brandon Hirata and Kason Gomes to collaborate, and the rest is history. The trio, whose name translates to “unmatched” or “incomparable,” embodies the spirit of Hawaiian music: connection, joy, and storytelling.
Over time, their shared love for music evolved into a commitment to creating something lasting. “Out of the blue, we collectively said, ‘Let’s make an album,’” Koakane recalls. The result? A Christmas album that captures the essence of the holidays with a Hawaiian twist.

In 2023, this historic town on Maui’s western peninsula faced unimaginable devastation during the Maui wildfires. The tragedy left the community grappling with loss, but also sparked an outpouring of love and resilience. Launa’ole’s album aims to bring joy and hope to those affected, serving as a musical embrace during the holiday season.
“This entire album is dedicated to the people of Lahaina to bring hope and joy,” the group shares. It’s a sentiment that resonates in every note, from the cheerful jingles of “Mele Kalikimaka ia kākou” to the poignant lyrics of “The Sweetest Gift.”
The album opens with “Mele Kalikimaka ia kākou,” a bright and traditional Hawaiian Christmas song that sets the festive tone. Sung in Hawaiian, it celebrates the birth of Jesus and the joy of the season. Following this, familiar classics like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Jingle Bells” get a Hawaiian makeover with island-style instrumentals.

Its lyrics—“Although this year I have a broken heart, it gives me hope and joy as I remember where you are”—offer comfort to those grieving, reminding listeners of the beauty of faith and the promise of reunion.
