Swedish artist Lin (AKA Linnéa Kuling) has been writing music since she was just seven years old. She was first recognized as an author, writing Knutbyflickan (The Knutby Girl), which details her childhood experience living in Sweden’s most famous cult – which she only escaped from four years ago. But Lin is a capable writer in many forms – she’s recently released her single Monster In Your Mind. This electro-pop track is a dynamic, powerful work that shows off Lin’s writing, compositional, and performing skills in the best way.
With EDM influences and a vibrant melodic base, Monster In Your Mind is a great blend of soulful pop sounds and pure electronica. Lin’s voice is remarkable, full of power and energy – and her unique timbre is perhaps reminiscent of Sia with a little bit more of an edge. It’s the perfect vessel for the catchy melody that permeates this track, accompanied by heavy, crunchy synths and a relentless bassline that gives it a touch of that classic EDM feel. It’s a well-thought-out combination of genres, highlighting the components of each that work best together for a fully immersive experience.
The lyrics of this particular track are incredibly thoughtful – a blend of poeticism and candidness. It paints a vivid picture of the internal struggle being depicted throughout the track:
“When times get rough,
you can close your eyes,
I’ll hold you tight.
Cause you can’t run,
you can’t hide
from the monster in your mind.“
Bold, dark, and compelling – this is a strong showing of musical and lyrical talent. Lin tells us she hasn’t finished even a tenth of all the songs she’s written, and we’ll be eager to hear whichever one she decides to release next – a new single is expected to premiere in the fall. And after a stellar release like this one, the bar will be set high for new music going forward (but with the kind of talent on display here, we’ll be waiting for it on the edge of our seat, fully expecting to be blown away). But until then, alt-pop and EDM-inspired fans will feel right at home on Monster In Your Mind.
