Certain songs take on a greater power when the right voice is singing them. Oftentimes, when a good songwriter has an idea for a great song, a little piece of their soul ends up on display in the final product. It’s a terrifying but often liberating feeling, and it becomes gratifying when the world receives that piece of you with grace. This is precisely the story of Madeline Finn‘s most recent single, Whippoorwill.
Cleveland born but currently Nashville based, Finn has seen her fair share of accomplishments to date, including becoming a Top 70 American Idol finalist in 2018 and winning the 2020 John Lennon Singer Songwriter Love Songs Contest with her song Love Me Like I Love You.
She says of the single, “‘Whippoorwill’ was a challenging exploration into the world of personal sacrifice and the meaning of success. A passion piece from start to finish.” This candid look into the personal challenges Finn has faced is so elegantly expressed in this track, and presented in such a way that you’ll find thoughts of the struggles you’ve faced yourself bubbling to your mind’s surface as you drift through the verses.
Finn’s voice is pure magic, delicate and airy but with an undeniable intensity at the height of the track. Accompanied by gentle piano that crescendos with purpose to an electric peak, this song is singer-songwriter instrumentation at its very finest. And then there’s the lyrics – poetic, insightful, and raw, emotion hanging from every syllable. One sentence that particularly stands out comes early on, in the first verse : “Do you still spend all your time waiting for the world outside to change?” The song is full of these one-line bombs of insight, forcing an internal reflection of decisions and choices made, for good or bad.
Simply put – if you’re a fan of vocal-forward, lyrically-brilliant, dynamic and vulnerable singer-songwriter ballads, Madeline Finn‘s Whippoorwill is practically tailor-made for you, and you’d be doing yourself a disservice not to take a listen.
