Originally from Chicago, singer/songwriter Matt B has been making big waves in the industry throughout his career. His albums Love & War and Dive both hit number one on the iTunes R&B charts in Japan, and his US debut album Eden charted at number three (and has accumulated over one million streams worldwide). His most recent release is a single titled Gimme Love. Featuring Ugandan artist Eddy Kenzo, this dynamic, danceable world-pop track is a verifiable hit and a clear indicator that all of Matt’s success so far has been more than warranted.
This is the kind of track that stands out in the crowded dance music scene instantly. Gimme Love is electric from the start, a bright synth melody carrying the track’s instrumentation. It’s rich, textured, and incredibly catchy, with all the makings of a truly memorable release. The vocals of Matt and Eddy work incredibly well together. Both vocalists utilize a warm, pop-tinged tone and create brilliant vocal harmonies at around 2:11 – a standout moment in this production.
The official music video for this track is stunning. Matt B recently discovered he has African ancestry, and wanted to feature that in this track. He’s done this by not only collaborating with Eddy Kenzo, but by featuring traditional African dancers throughout the video. Their cultural garments and impressive dancing create a truly vibrant, cinematic experience that is a perfect complement to the cultural link that lead to this song.
On the surface level, this work from Matt B is an absolute earworm that deserves a spot on all the most popular summer playlists. But the combination of the deep cultural connection and modern production and execution makes this a resonant work of art. It’s truly the best of both worlds – stream Gimme Love below and see for yourself.
