In 2017, we called KerKeri, New Zealand rock-legend Merv Pinny’s single, Wipe Out, “…An edgy, grimy rock cut, with definite metal overtones…” Fast forward a couple of years, and this self-proclaimed Social Action Rocker has not only completed his socially and politically charged 5-track EP, 2018’s Twisted Minds, he’s also recently released a new single by the same name.
Merv Pinny: Social Action Rocker
Let’s first break-down the EP, which begins with Hear They Come, a track which honors the recent increase in school shootings. Next is Little Demons, a track about mental illness and insanity. Third is OB Can You Hear The Children Cry, a track in which Merv pours all his angst about terrorism. (By the way, all profits made from this song are to go to children in crises.) Fourth is our previously reviewed rock-metal thriller, Wipe Out, a tale of a man who lost his entire family to violence. And finally, I Feel Like A Prisoner, a track which gives voice to the division that grows between the USA and Mexico over the border wall and the growing refugee crises.
This year’s Twisted Minds, single is actually a lethal combination of the EP’s first two tracks, Hear They Come and Little Demons. The former serves as a dark and sinister intro to the latter. Once united, the end-result is riff-packed early-nineties-style metal-rock track in quintessential Merv Pinny-fashion. If you don’t yet know what “quintessential Merv Pinny-fashion” means—I urge you to find out.
