Micheal Fordays is an indie music veteran who toured the world relentlessly with various underground bands. And his dependable playing and tireless work ethic led to larger supporting gigs, namely a residency as KMFDM’s guitarist, and guitarist (and sometimes co-writer) for artist Joan Jones. While honing his craft as a supporting musician, Fordays transferred that experience to his own music, writing and performing on several solo offerings (including 2013’s Balls and Blind Faith, 2015’s All the Rusty Keys, 2019’s Into the Black Air, and 2022’s Faces, Voices, and Souls).
With his latest full-length release, The Mind and Echoes, Fordays continues his brand of driving indie/alternative rock, and the album’s flagship single, “Slowly Now,” is a testament to that relentless, cutting-edge songcraft. Let’s break it down:
The start? Big, dirty guitar chords and harmonizing notes reminiscent of Brian May’s frequently used effect. And into the first verse, it’s more big guitar chords, Fordays’ clear and subtly sandy voice, propulsive drums, and nimble, momentum-sustaining bass.
The chorus? Muted, quickly plucked notes that absolutely scream guitar-based indie rock, and then a return to those big chords and the reserved utterance of “slowly, slowly nooooow.”
As the song rockets towards the end, and with bottomless gas tank and engine loudly revving, “Slowly Now” boasts a few more changes, a cutting, octave-layered guitar passage, and then a handful of closing staccato chords – it ends without slowing down, as if its unyielding trajectory finally bowed to a brick wall.
Do you like aggressive, energy-filled, guitar-built indie/alternative rock performed by an authentic songwriter who creates what moves him? Then you’ll absolutely appreciate “Slowly Now,” the flagship track from Fordays’ latest full-length release.
