Monique Grimme’s much-anticipated album is here for us to immerse ourselves in, titled The Croft of Grimme’s Tales and containing seven tracks crafted in collaboration with Sapphire Star Studios. Monique’s been busy teasing her LP with singles “Poison Ivy,” “Cut By A Rose” and “When A Butterfly Alights” throughout this summer; her album release finally sliding these singles into magnificent context.
The Croft Of Grimme’s Tales is woven around a staggering central concept, steeped in personal heritage, folklore tales and forest-blooming atmospheres. Here, Monique Grimme reimagines her family legacy, the creative impact of sharing a surname with the legendary fairytale writers, the Brothers Grimm, her family name hailing from the same country and historical period as the Grimm bros themselves.
As Monique reveals, “My family and the Brothers Grimm are linked not just by geography and the history of our original last name, but by a shared passion for storytelling. The legacy of preserving these tales runs in my blood. This album is my way of continuing that tradition, honoring my heritage while creating something new and contemporary.”
Monique’s trademark ‘80s atmospheres strike from the very first song, entitled “Fight-Less Friends” and capturing a theme of finding familiar strength in numbers. “The Ballad Of The Humble Clove” lets its soundscape fester in the dank and woodsy undergrowth, topped by bold songbird vocals and laced with softly enigmatic harmonies. Bongo beats stir an organic vibe, empowered by string sections and quirk-clad instruments that might belong on a mid-career Cure record.
The record’s title track is an instant jam; slow midnight grooves forming a perfect song for long, rainy journeys of inner contemplation and peace-seeking. Acoustic riffs intersperse the drum machine backdrop, glittering with retro synths and vocal tones fleshed with personality, all ribboned together by a vague sense of melancholy. making this song even more addicting.
Album closer “Deep In My Soul (Epilogue)” winds down with darkened tones, like watching the moon rise slowly above a roseate sunset. Put together, The Croft of Grimme’s Tales balances masterfully between musical exploration and self-assured consistency; an adventure through time both in soundscape and lyrics, as Monique traces the breadcrumb trail to her family’s distant origins.
