Hailing from Fort Worth, TX, rapper and producer ONE SON returns with affecting track, “I’m a Man” – a testament to authentic, strong, and honorable men who stand up for their beliefs, and especially their families.
ONE SON isn’t new to the game. Visiting New York during his formative years and drinking in the brewing Hip Hop culture, he became a DJ like his uncle, eventually meeting Big Daddy Kane’s DJ, Mr. Cee. And knowing Mr. Cee was a rapping maestro, ONE SON spit out his own, garnering praise from both Mr. Cee and rapping cohort Kool Ade. Having seriously impressed Mr. Cee (and, of course, Kool Ade), ONE SON’s future creative path immediately crystallized.
Today, and adding to an impressive catalog of over 10 releases, ONE SON’s “I’m a Man” celebrates men. He celebrates their strength, and their need to be strong. And he celebrates his own consistency and temerity stated plainly in the chorus:
“I’m a man. I choose to stand, never ran. I’m a man, do all I can for the fam.
I’m a man, it ain’t in the plans for me to fold.
I ain’t going to sell my soul.”
ONE SON’s words drop over repeated, 70s-tinged orchestration granted a groove through electronic percussion. Although these particular measures repeat throughout the song’s entirety, ONE SON’s dynamic flow keeps things interesting, filling unexpected rhythmic spaces with run-on, rhyming truths. An observation: There’s a clever, unexpected pause at about 1:39 – for a millisecond, the song stops, only to resume with momentum intact. It’s as if the “tape” skipped, or someone lifted, briefly, the record needle. (This was a nice surprise, and breaks up any perceived monotony.)
Looking for rap with a positive message? How about classic R&B orchestration with a tenacious beat and perfectly punctuated rhymes? If you’re all about old-school Hip Hop and empowering lyrics, you’re really going to appreciate ONE SON’s latest drop, “I’m a Man.”
