Longtime readers of The Ark are no strangers to the work of Rian Mac. We last got our hands on his single The Negative Brings Me Down, a track we found to be a “rock-based, pop-tinged, soulful multi-genre exploration“. Now Rian is back with another dynamic new single. Overthinking is a decidedly pop-rock track with bluesy, soulful undertones that create a wholly enjoyable and unique listening experience.
The guitar tone and riff that kick off Overthinking are starting to become signature Rian Mac sounds. Over the light percussion, the intricate bass riff is given a brilliant moment in the sun before the vocals kick in and take the spotlight. The horns are a particularly bright and fun addition that give this track a different sonic texture than his previous single, but feel like a natural choice in this track with is undeniable roots in soul sounds. The dynamic between Rian’s voice and the softer, smokier tones of the female backing vocals offers a great juxtaposition throughout the track, creating a balance between grit and smoothness in the vocal space.
Once again, Rian has written something with a universal message. Overthinking explores themes of love and loss, tied together with an earworm of a hook that is as catchy as it is relatable. But reliability doesn’t always equal simplicity, and Rian shows off some more poetic lyric work in the verses of this track:
“She don’t want to talk about it
telling me in whispers
A sharp edge tongue gonna cut you down
You’ve been dragging my name
all over this town“
With each new addition to Rian Mac‘s catalog, we only find ourselves more impressed with his range and artistic ability, and Overthinking is a killer new addition. This is a fun, uptempo track that is delivered with intention and keeps a keen eye on production, creating a unique soundscape that rides right between the edges of alt-pop and modern indie rock. Look for Overthinking on its official release date of April 22nd.
