Rob Alexander – A Song to Get Us Through (single)

January 13, 2021 The Ark of Music Leave a Comment

Adult pop songwriter Rob Alexander is back this year with brand new music, just after his single This Hollywood Road graced our 2020 Top 10 Singles list. True to his style, his most recent release A Song to Get Us Through has all the feel and flair of an Elton John piano anthem, backed with top-tier musicality and a hint of modern flair to make things his own.

Alexander regularly records with musicians that have worked with Elton John themselves – this track in particular features his long-time guitarist Davey Johnstone on mandolin. The inclusion of the synths and strings adds depth and dynamics to this piano-based track, and combined with the brightness of the exquisite mandolin playing, the instrumentation of this track is a wonderfully diverse, absolutely delightful collection of tones that are as eclectic as they are successful.

According to Alexander this song was pandemic-inspired, and was written about the most dismal portions of the lockdown. While this is of course reflected in the title, the lyrics elaborate on his own personal experience further. Taking the uplifting, optimistic angle, Alexander calls for us to look on the bright side, to appreciate all that we’ve been given despite challenging circumstances. It’s beautifully stated in the chorus:

“So come out wherever you are.
There’s a whole lot of life to be living.
And if we time it right, you’ll lend me an ear.
And we’ll share all the love we’ve been given”

Alexander’s voice is perhaps one of the biggest highlights of this track; it’s just brimming with power and character. He seems to channel the same kind of energy as iconic vocalist Chris Stapleton (purely in execution, not style!) – both of these artists often write lyrics that are fairly straightforward and uncomplicated, but the complex, deep, and rich tones in their respective voices make the meaning behind these lyrics even more pronounced, effectively bringing the whole song together and making it all the more compelling as a listener. It’s a rare trait, and always an exciting one to find in an indie artist especially.

It’s no question that Elton John fans will feel right at home with A Song To Get Us Through. But this track works on so many levels – for fans of top-tier vocal performances, for fans of complex and truly professional instrumentation, or even for those just looking for a little inspiration after a tough year – this most recent single from Rob Alexander is the song you need right now. His album Dream Out Loud containing this single will be released February 5, 2021 – mark your calendars.
