From performing in church choir and violin lessons as a child, to a Master’s degree from the Boston Conservatory of Music, the craft of sound has always been a part of Santa Monica, California-based vocalist, Teresa Mai’s life.
Now, as the Vietnamese American, Tibetan Buddhist, and Kundalini Yoga instructor has developed her vocal craft into opera and mantra, the name Sangeeta Kaur has been bestowed upon her. A name which means, “princess of music and harmony”.
With a mission to heal through her sonic art form, her previous works include the groundbreaking mantra-operas known as Niguma (2016) and its sequel Ascension (2017), along with her 2018 album, Mirrors. Her latest album is the, yet again, uniquely soothing new-age experience, Compassion.
“My soul has a commitment to infuse the dharma and ancient wisdom into everything I do. I want to be available to those who are ready for it. The songs must serve a true purpose and for anyone being challenged in these times, I am committed to sharing music that uplifts and inspires the soul.”
HERE’S WHAT WE DUG MOST…
The album opens with, Om Tare Tuttare Ture Soha, an aged and stirring mantra which essentially serves as a student’s dedicated oath to their peaceful practice.
OUR FAVORITE TRACK…
Without a word ever uttered, the minimalist, Transcendence, uses little more than a rolling piano, strings, and layer upon layer of vocal melodies all coexisting and co-creating a deeply serene landscape of sound. But it’s the violin solo at 3:12 which makes this our favorite track.
Those beautiful layers of operatic vocals unite only with singing bowls to lay minds to rest in, Song Of Compassion. Featuring Hila Plitmann (vocals) and Danae Vlasse (singing bowls).
The purification mantra, Om Vajra Sattva Hum, builds slowly for over seven minutes of core-soothing melody.
Water flows over expansive vocal layers in our second favorite, We Are One. Arguably the album’s most cinematic track, it feels like it belongs in the apex scene of The Lion King.
IN CONCLUSION…
Undeniably tranquil. Soothing and restful. A sonic respite. Sangeeta Kaur’s (a.k.a., Teresa Mai), latest studio album, the new-age crossover project, Compassion, sees the budding artist dive further into the exploration of her vocal gift, using her voice as the album’s primary instrument, the primary tool—the primary mechanism—for rest, safety, and the provision of a peaceful oasis for her listeners.
Free of emotional vice and indulgences of any kind, this exquisitely produced project ultimately serves as a vessel for those who wish to empty their mind of the modern day’s clutter. It is absolutely a therapeutic adventure for those who seek. Listen below.
