Scott McDonald’s explosive new album See It Through (released on Bongo Boy Records) has arrived, featuring 12 fresh tracks that prove rock music still lives on, thriving. With catchy melodies you can sing at the top of your lungs and anthemic choruses that deserve to be belted out in a stadium, See It Through is action packed with hits, carved with unexpected influences and topped with spotless vocals; a headbang-worthy record that’ll hit with young and old rock fans alike.
The album’s slightly retro feel offers a fresh break in the modern rock scene, steeped in bright influences from its good old classic/hard rock riffs to the grungy, pop-punk vibe which drives its prelude single and second track, “Wave.” But, as usual, Scott McDonald warps the norm, threading his latest record with compelling detours through the eras and subgenres of rock, pop and metal, crafting each song with a rare zest of its own, yet with a seamless finish all-round.
“See It Through” hits some unexpected high notes within its gritty atmosphere before tapping into some oddly psychedelic middle-eight melodies. “Kiss The Earth Goodbye” could almost be an Ozzy Osbourne hit with its heavy metal guitar tones and gothic synth pads. All the while, Scott McDonald brings guitar solos and headbang riffs back into fashion, placed atop classic song structures which recognize music as an art form rather than a clippable, TikTok-ready commodity.
And Scott McDonald takes good advantage of that classic structure, his album revealing personal thoughts, complex emotions and real-world truths through his deeply relevant lyrical messages.
“One Mistake I Can’t Repeat” carves away the rock distortions electrifying this record, mellowing things to a Beatles-like ballad with a folk pop / country pop feeling. “Circling The Drain” almost comedically contrasts its bleak lyrical focus with an extravagantly upbeat soundscape, laced with a jazz-like turn which pushes the boundaries of Scott’s usual guitar composition.
See It Through was produced by Scott McDonald and Brian J. Anthony, in collaboration with musicians Tom Nelson, David Anthony, Kim Williams, Karl Dietel, Kathy Phillips, Dave Doll and Rene Bergamino.
