Trio Sons of Jersey is comprised of an impressive group of professional musicians, releasing both original and cover tunes that rise to the standards that you’d expect from these industry veterans. Comprised of Chip Mergott (guitar, vocals), Alan LeBoeuf (bass, vocals), and Jim Flynn (drums, vocals, engineering), the band separated for several years before reuniting to bring some of their favorite music back to life. Their impressive amount of collective experience most recently shines on a cover of a classic gospel/blues tune Don’t Let Nobody Turn You Around.
Made popular by the Steve Miller Band back in the 70’s with a driving beat and plenty of nods to its original gospel form, Sons of Jersey have produced a version of the track that seems to have used this popular cover as a reference point, but it’s not without its own artistic flair. With a heavier rock beat and a distorted guitar solo, the move towards a more classic rock sound is a welcome and enjoyable artistic choice, lending a different color to the track as a whole.
The vocal harmonies are a high point in this cover. Gospel is famous for its angelic, booming harmonies allowing so many voices to come together in a cohesive way, and it’s great to see a nod to the song’s origins here in a subtle way. Though they’re only working with three voices as opposed to a choir, they blend together in an expert way and help elevate this rendition even further. The featured falsetto towards the end of the song is another impressive show of vocal skill.
Overall, this is high level execution of an excellent piece of music, and the spin brought to it by Sons Of Jersey is indicative of their many years of collective skills in their industry. Their version of Don’t Let Nobody Turn You Around has recently been released on Bongo Boy Records, and is also featured on the label’s popular blues album series, Backroom Blues Volume Nine. If you’re a fan of the classic, authentic blues sound, this is a must-listen in our book.
