When two musical producers joined in mutual musical advantage in 2018 to form, The Jon Johns, lovers of free-art, free-thought, sonic bliss and exploration everywhere were rewarded.
True to their indie-music roots, the Jon Johns write, perform, record, mix, produce and release all of their own music.
Their debut album, Road Trip Mixtape, is an absolutely brilliant multi-genre explorative, which features the lovely, acoustic guitar-centered lead-off single, Stories. Immediately reminiscent of acts from yesteryear (Dylan) and today (Great Lake Swimmers, Ugly Casanova, Love As Laughter), this musically minimalist composition is full of heart and introspective contemplation…
“And we’ll grow up, some day and get wed
And we’ll read stories, and put the kids to bed…”
But don’t—I repeat, do NOT—think you know and understand these fellas by listening to this one track. To get a better notion of what and how they chose to comune with their musical muse(s), at minimum one must also give time to, Fleetwood, the album’s ultra-chill funk-meets-hip-hop jam, as well as the electro-pop-disco-centric, Teenage Love. This kind of variety—this refusal to be pigeon-holed in any one single genre—is what lovers of music everywhere have been waiting for since music’s very first recorded expressions were cut.
