Hailing from Burleson, Texas, country singer/songwriter Todd Barrow has been making waves in the music industry, receiving significant local and international airplay, and performing alongside industry greats like John Schneider, Billy Joe Shaver, and Paul Overstreet. What I’m saying is this: his star is rising, and his latest single,“Jungle Out There,” only gives credence to this steady, well-deserved ascent.
Wait. Who does what?
Todd Barrow is, of course, the primary songwriter and responsible for that pure country vocal. He’s aided/abetted by Josh Rogers on drums, Aden Bubeck on bass, Jerry Renolds on acoustic guitar, and Greg White on guitars in general, but specifically, those you plug in.
Facing the music…
“Jungle Out There” is, objectively, country radio gold. Seriously, it’s so perfectly produced but not overproduced, accessible as all get out, running a quick and digestible 3:04, and telling a simple tale through relatable lyrics. SERIOUSLY! This should be ALL OVER the radio and causing server collapses from unnaturally heavy streaming demands.
It begins with three big and dirty electric guitar chords, and heads right into those story-weaving lyrics. “Jungle Out There” holds a steady beat; the verses quieter, and the choruses gain some nice female accompaniment.
And Todd’s voice: it’s clean as can be – no melodramatic phrasing, country-leaning or otherwise. It’s strong, effective, and clearly understood – the perfect voice for storytelling through song.
At about 1:52, a tasteful guitar solo marks a quick bridge that drops the instruments for a few seconds; there’s a brief focus on the harmony, and then instruments return; they carry us to our final refrain of the chorus, and then a few familiar staccato chords signal the end.
But is it good?
This is superstardom in the making. All the ingredients are there. If you like modern country/crossover, or lean more towards contemporary pop, this is the song you’ll be humming for days – WEEKS – after your first, and one-thousandth, listen. Recommended.
