Tom P Buckley is an alt-pop/EDM artist from Portland, Maine. He writes and self-produces all of his own music and has recently released his brand new album, Ten. Ten is a collection of songs Buckley wrote following a recent surgery of his, as he was inspired to create something meaningful after realizing that life is short.
In Your Eyes has an upbeat playful energy and employs a sparse arrangement like much of the album. The lyric talks about finding meaning in the eyes of a comforting person and the ascending melody of the chorus is mirrored perfectly by the chord shapes underneath.
The Letter employs a syncopated strings arrangement and features glockenspiel and harpsichord-sounding melodies to give the song a faraway ambiance. Buckley uses double-tracking on his voice – as with much of the album – to add emphasis to certain lines.
The songs on Ten all have a lot of personal meaning behind them, but Buckley’s dance-informed electronic production ensures that there is always plenty of groove to digest at the surface level. He uses a variety of instruments and timbres to give each song its own unique atmosphere.
