Award-winning, Texas-based country songwriter Tommy Patterson released his second album, Spending A Dollar, last month – collecting twelve brand new tracks including his latest single, “This Little Church I Grew Up In,” and packing them into a sunny 40-minute run-time; a perfect soundtrack for your afternoon drive, family get-together, or summer’s BBQ and kick-back with the boys.
Tommy fashions themes from the old-school country greats into a stunning blend where upbeat, feel-good vibes merge with refreshing, chilled-out atmospheres. These are twelve tracks you can dance to, unwind to, and reinvent your mindset with as they capture the clear-skied energy of stepping into countless good days ahead.
Like all good country and folk records, each track is twined with some sort of story, whether it be a classic love song or a vivid, relatable flashback to one’s youth playing Tarzan, Spiderman, and The Lone Ranger in a childhood backyard. But when it comes to those classic love songs, Spending A Dollar is loaded with them; their lyrics sweet enough to make any lady listener swoon or make any man realise the blessings he’s been given. These tracks are both tender and punchy, blissfully atmospheric yet honest, realistic, leaving no inner feelings unturned.
This record was a band effort, perfected with the help of bassist, guitarist, backing vocalist, mandolin-player and producer Jordan McBride, drummer Nate Coon, guitarist Bryce Clark, fiddler Damian Green, pianist Clayton Corn, and mix-and-masterer Will Armstrong; names who country fans might recall from their previous work in Aaron Watson’s band. And Tommy certainly uses their session work to his advantage; each track sounding seamless, radiant in its final effect, forming a finished album as perfect as a country chart-topper.
It’s not surprising that two of Tommy Patterson’s album tracks, “1309 North Austin” and “Memories That Last Forever,” won first and second place in the Dallas Songwriters Association contest, and as Spending A Dollar hits all good music streaming sites, it seems a record that’s destined to make waves this summer.
Our final verdict? Highly Recommended.
