Cologne-born, New York-based singer-songwriter Uta Habbig dazzled fans last May when she dropped her second full-length album, “Another Sky” – the long-awaited follow-up to 2016’s “Windward”. Nestled in the album’s clutches is the opalite tune, Dreams, a serene song capturing a tapestry of emotion “from hope to hardship,” as described in Uta’s own words.
Woven from gleaming threads of jazz, chamber pop and classical music, with a dash of classic, folksy singer-songwriter sprinkled in its midst, Dreams was spawned from the rich inspiration of a night at NYC’s Village Vanguard; its lyrics an intimate exploration of life’s dreams and romantic struggles, laced with “snapshots of vulnerability and strength,” and themes of “consolation, inspiration and reflection,” as Uta reveals herself.
But this song offers so much more. Lyrically, an ethereal dreamscape is painted in soothing pastel tones; enchanting imagery of love, hope, and the natural world cascade through Uta’s velvet vocals, as her easy-listening soundscape allows we listeners to float like feathers on her silk-soft breath.
Nostalgic tones meet non-conventional measures, each jazzy edge smoothed and re-centred in Uta’s gentle, trance-like atmosphere; a soft and delicious contrast that illumines pure artistry within the simplest moments.
With Uta Habbig stealing the limelight as the track’s singer-songwriter, Dreams also features piano by Dominic Mekky, guitar by Franky Rousseau, bass by Adi Meyerson, drums by Connor Parks, and an exquisite trumpet solo by Ari Bragi Kárason.
