You may remember Vargen (AKA Reine Johansson) from his album of Bob Dylan covers we had the pleasure of reviewing earlier this year – Love / Leave – 11 Songs of Bob Dylan. Vargen is back with new music – a gorgeous holiday tune that features singer-songwriter Anna Vild, and is both artist’s first original release in English – To Stockholm From L.A.
Inspired by Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem “Ring Out, Wild Bells”, this soft and gentle composition takes a melancholy look at the difficulties that come with being away from loved ones at the end of the year, a theme that – combined with the challenges brought on by the pandemic – will be relatable to so many this holiday season.
Vargen’s voice is deep and husky, a perfect complement to Vild’s angelic soprano in this duet. Driven by an intricate piano and interspersed with tasteful guitar licks, there’s just a touch of a country twang in the execution of this light, airy, Christmas tune. For those looking for a new addition to their holiday playlists, To Stockholm From L.A. should fit in nicely between the likes of Christmas Shoes and Last Christmas, as an ode to the parts of the holiday season that might not be all merry and bright, but make for excellent music anyways.
