The love you hold for your children? Immense, incalculable, and you would, without hesitation, move the world for them. Willow Layne, the moniker for prolific songwriter and lyricist Lisa Benedetto, once again teams with the talented musicians/vocalists at Countryside Studios to create “Sweet Child of Mine” – a musical celebration of, and testament to, a mother’s great and boundless love.
Supported and promoted by indie artist label Bongo Boy Records, Willow Layne successfully delivers a modern spin on emotive, hometown-hugging country music. Ready to dig in and let the feelings – and maybe a few tears – flow? Let’s listen, and talk about it.
Listening, and talking about it.
“Sweet Child of Mine” features a strumming acoustic base with an immediately memorable and sliding electric guitar riff. The lead vocal, with its subtle country twang and comforting, home-welcoming timbre, presents with a modern glazing of note-bending autotune – and this creative choice adroitly joins the ruminating nature of country music with today’s modern production preferences.
And this notable voice, reserved in the song’s first passages of experience-bearing storytelling, lifts into an impressive and strongly belted range to convey Lisa’s hope, unwavering motherly commitment, and deep and perpetual love. It’s impressive, and the swelling instrumentation, pristinely produced and sonically filling, grants such vocal power the perfect emotional push.
When the song concludes, it does so as softly as it began, and Lisa’s final feelings linger beyond the dissipation of that final and hopeful chord.
But is it good?
It’s great, because it effectively conveys the greatest thing of all: a mother’s uncompromising, unquantifiable love. It hits all the emotions, all the nuances, all the trials, and all the memories (both heart-filling and heartbreaking). It tells the story of a child/parent’s bond starting before birth, strengthening through life, and proving powerful enough to maintain the boldest hopes in often unpromised futures. So, did Lisa Benedetto’s collaborative Willow Layne project once again succeed in creating something melodically captivating, authentically experienced, and emotionally moving? Absolutely, and as per usual, we strongly recommend it.
