Artist Wingman has been pursuing his musical passions since a young age. He began making beats while growing up, inspired by artists like Kasbo and Flume, which eventually resulted in a desire to blend rapping over electronic compositions. The resulting sound that he’s created is a fresh and melodic take on modern hip-hop that looks to resonate with a wide variety of popular music fans. Wingman has recently released a single titled Weird New Feelings, and this catchy, incessantly fun number just soars – literally.
This track starts loosely and with subtlety, a collection of modern synths and sounds that flow together seamlessly. The track has a great build, from the first chorus to last, increasing in intensity and style as it progresses. But the hook is the highlight of this track, without question – this is an earworm from the first listen, the kind of song that’ll be stuck in your head almost immediately after you hear it. Which might be bothersome, if it wasn’t so excellently written. It’s a near-perfect pop melody with equally as effective lyrics – straightforward and simple, but also managing to tell an entire story in a few short lines:
“Ice around my neck, weird new feelings
And I’m about to leave this city, rearview feelings
Stacking hundreds on the table, need a new feeling
Getting used to me, how does that leave you feeling“
The music video for this track only serves to elevate it further – the cinematography is top-notch and does a brilliant job of showcasing everything that Wingman is trying to say in this song. With his emphasis on success and achievement, Wingman climbing into a helicopter and flying well above the clouds feels like such a natural choice for the video, quite literally soaring above everyone and everything. Combine this with some gorgeous desert imagery and a skillful collection of wonderfully diverse dancers, and the video just seems to hit every nail on the head.
We don’t think we’re exaggerating when we say Wingman is the real deal and is absolutely proving it with this release. Is it too early to be naming contenders for “Song of the Summer” yet? Because Weird New Feelings absolutely captures that carefree, laid-back, good-time summertime energy that we’re all craving right about now. An excellent electro-pop hip-hop hybrid with an endlessly catchy chorus and a killer cinematic experience to tie it all together – this track is a total home run in every way.
