Florida based artist Young Sovl has been pursuing his passion since he started singing in his high school’s choir. He went on to study music and music business in college to expand his skills, learning both piano and opera. From there he began managing producers, connecting hem with artists like Syaridakid, Kevin Cossom, Trae the Truth, and others. Things have begun to fall into place since he’s been able to focus on his own music, working with artists like Selfish Ways, performing live, working with producer Ray Ali, and even landing a sync license at Capitol Records. Currently, Young Solv specializes in singing, songwriting, rapping, and creating hip-hop, pop, and soul/R&B music. All of the hard work and successes he’s experienced so far are on display on his recent single Groove.
Living up to its name immediately, Groove has both an infectious beat and melody from the opening lines. The bassline is funky and memorable, effortlessly making way for the smooth and soulful falsetto-forward vocals that start the track. There is clear hip-hop influence in the rhythm here, but a definitive pop flavor in the melodic lines and underlying instruments, and Young Sovl clearly has no trouble moving between these genres.
The production is minimalistic and modern, avoiding any overcrowding in the instrumentation, something that happens all too often in these styles. The restraint speaks to Young Sovl’s familiarity with the components of a well-produced song. We particularly like the call-and-response feel the different vocal sections have, with three distinct styles trading off turns in the spotlight – it’s a unique production choice and a real highlight.
Overall, this track radiates professionalism, skill, and talent. This is an expertly produced, extraordinarily composed, and perfectly performed piece of music that blends hip-hop and pop stylings seamlessly. There’s so much to love about the things Young Sovl is doing in Groove, and if this is any indicator of his potential, we look forward to listening to plenty more of his work for years to come.
