Artist, graphic designer, college professor, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, keys), Ian Smith, created the project and musical moniker known as Zero Frequency in order to create a body of music which would ultimately serve as stress-relief while going for his Master’s Thesis.
“I would still be doing my music whether or not anyone was listening.”
Says Smith, “I had been musically dormant for many years before taking on the Zero Frequency project. I had so much pent-up anxiety while writing my Master’s Thesis, that I channeled all my downtime into this ‘band’ to help relieve my stress.”
“It’s ironic that I’m trying to create raw 20th Century music with obvious 21st Century technology, but that makes this project unique.”
Now, with the creative aid of his internet colleagues and online freelancers, Ian’s work has paid off with the release of his 3-part series, The Ocean’s End, Vol. 1, Vol. 2, and Vol. 3, an epic lo-fi trilogy of concept albums made with the intention of giving musical testimony to sexual discovery from the female perspective.
With its perfectly basic pop-rock composition, Artemis Descends, the lead-off single of Volume 1, (also our favorite track from the album) instantly reminded me of Wild Belle’s killer 2016 single, Giving Up On You.
Complete with a grimy little solo at the 1:30 mark, ultimately, what we have here is a rockingly-uncomplicated track of raw, unguided ambition…
“Climbing up, wait for me
Getting there, trust in me
Letting go, I feel the sound
Giving up, I’m falling down
I’m falling down, I’m falling…”
WHOSE LOVECHILD…?
Wild Belle meets Adele…
