A classically trained guitarist who spent many years performing psychedelic rock all across Europe, artist Alan Rigoletto moved cross-country from New Jersey to L.A. last year, spurred by a pandemic-induced gig drought. The move inspired a series of five self-produced songs, the first of which is an evocative, dynamic indie-folk number titled Plain Clothed Ghost.
Rigoletto’s brilliant guitar skills are on immediate display in this anthemic track. Intricate, delicate guitar lines move elegantly throughout the piece, an excellent complement to Rigoletto’s nuanced and warm voice. There’s a captivating build here, starting exceedingly gently and crescendoing to a peak of booming percussion and a choir of harmonies. But don’t let the well-thought-out production be a distraction to the lyrics, as they, too, are a high note for this single. Rigoletto has a poetic writing style that illustrates without cliches or tired metaphors, a rare and welcome treat in this genre:
“Specter sneaking
Past the weekend strangers
Crowding all the downtown galleries
Peering into the fuss
I feel the hidden pangs of the
Warmly glowing spirit I always thought I was“
This is an example of a quintessential indie folk track done right. Authenticity and artistry abound in this single by Alan Rigoletto; indeed, he’s set the bar high for himself for the four tracks planned to follow this one. With quality songwriting as the foundation and skillful musicianship at the helm, fans of both the classic singer-songwriter style as well as those with an appreciation for modern flair will find a lot to love in Plain Clothed Ghost.
