Mexican singer/producer, Alvin Harrison, has been slowly gathering attention with his organic strain of club/dance music. We’ll be taking a look at his wonderful new single, I’m So Happy, which has been released by CanTune Records.
The song is a celebration of love, with Harrison expressing his happiness at finding the person of his dreams. The lyrics read as a great, long list of reasons why he’s grateful for the love that he’s found, and Harrison takes some time to reminisce about when they first started seeing each other… “I’m so happy when I remember our first kiss / I’m so happy when I think about the first time we made love”.
I’m So Happy takes the form of a mid-tempo house beat, and is given a funky dynamic by Harrison’s use of a busy, slap-bass part. The harmony counters the lyric in an interesting way; Atmospheric synth voicings and arpeggios serve to add upper extensions to the static minor chord underneath, creating a reflective, suspenseful mood that is at odds with the ecstatic stance of the lyric.
Harrison’s voice has a confident, gruff, rough-around-the-edges vibe that is easy to sing along to and gives him a charming, relatability. He is a natural at alternating his syntax and flow, which provides just enough variation to I’m So Happy’s simple song form. Harrison also adds some nice harmony layers to his vocal at key moments.
I’m So Happy is sure to go down a treat in the nightclub scene. It’s dark and mysterious but similarly smooth and accessible. The vocal is well delivered and catchy, and the production quality is superb. Alvin Harrison is definitely one artist to keep an eye on!
