West coast based hip-hop artist DBizz has released his first single of 2020, titled Jade. Drawing from the area he grew up in, DBizz’s music is heavily influenced by the West Coast. DBizz’s work often features fellow Bay area artists; his previous project Chose was a collaboration with artist Too Short. This most recent release Jade features rapper & singer/songwriter Iamsu!.
“Iamsu! is dope, he works fast and he brings a nice up beat style to the song,” says DBizz.
Jade is based on firsthand experience both Iamsu! and DBizz have in regards to the experiences had by nightclub dancers in Las Vegas. It’s a collection of three different perspectives on the issue – once from each rapper, and a third perspective from a dancer. This track offers candid, genuine insight into a controversial profession, and it’s packaged in an expertly executed modern hip-hop package.
If we were to sum up this track in a single word, it would unquestionably be smooth. The rapping, the lyrics, the instrumentation – it’s all incredibly smooth and each section flows effortlessly from one section to the next. The addition of the rap from Iamsu! gives a great variety to the song, yet his vocals still blend in perfectly with the production and with DBizz’s.
The track has a light, almost delicate intro that’s full of spacey synths before dropping into the main beat. The bassline in particular is remarkably catchy, the electric tone driving the song forward alongside the percussion. The instrumentation behind the vocals is busy, but never chaotic – rather, it’s a skillful mix of sounds that elevate the track. To top it all off, the main melodic hook, while simple, is certainly memorable.
Overall, Jade does a phenomenal job of painting an all encompassing picture of nightclub dancers. It’s authentic, the grit of the profession and the trials and tribuations these dancers face present in the lyrics, yet the instrumentation maintains its velvety quality that creates great contrast between the subject matter and the tone of the song. We’d be more than interested in another DBizz and Iamsu! collaboration if this is any indicator of the skill and talent these two artists have when working together, but it has us looking forward to hearing more from DBizz and other artists in the future as well.
