Jack Marton – Raindrops on the Kitchen Floor

December 5, 2024 The Ark of Music Leave a Comment

There’s something magical about how a song can take you to another place. That’s exactly what Jack Marton does with his version of Raindrops on the Kitchen Floor. It’s not just a cover—it’s a fresh, feel-good take on Mason Jennings’ original, with an acoustic vibe that feels as warm and real as a rainy day spent indoors. Released on August 2, 2024, this track brings together a dream team: Jack Marton, Mason Jennings, and percussionist Adam Topol. And trust me, the result is something special.

Jack Marton’s journey is as interesting as his music. Born in Venice, Italy, he grew up moving around Europe thanks to his parents’ work, soaking up different cultures and sounds. When he landed in California to finish his schooling, he started blending everything he’d heard and learned into something uniquely his. His influences? A mix of Americana, folk, and a little neo-mellow magic, all tied together by years of playing old acoustic guitars and spinning timeless records.

Jack’s big break came in 2016 when producer Marino De Angeli noticed his talent. That collaboration kicked off a creative streak that led to his self-titled debut EP in 2018, which got a lot of love from both fans and critics. Fast forward to now, and Jack’s working with some serious heavyweights like Mason Jennings (a Brushfire Records alum) and Adam Topol, who’s been Jack Johnson’s go-to drummer. Together, they’ve created a version of Raindrops on the Kitchen Floor that stands out while staying true to the heart of the original.

This take on the song has a completely different vibe. Where the original had a more introspective feel, Jack’s version is lighter, happier, and full of acoustic charm. Adam Topol’s percussion work really makes it shine, giving it that laid-back rhythm you’d expect from someone who’s played alongside Jack Johnson and Zach Gill. The sound is dry, natural, and stripped back in the best way, making it feel like you’re right there in the room with them.

The lyrics are pure poetry, painting everyday moments that feel both personal and universal. Lines like “Raindrops on the kitchen floor, and the curtain is blowing where the window’s open” and “One boat in an open sea, it’s just you and me and our hearts to guide us” hit you right in the feels. It’s a love song, sure, but it’s also about finding beauty in the simple things—those little moments that make life worth it.

One of the coolest things about this version is how Jack manages to make it his own while keeping the spirit of the original alive. His vocals, with that unique accent that’s a mix of his European roots and California upbringing, add something fresh. And with Mason Jennings joining in, it feels like a genuine meeting of minds (and voices).

What really ties it all together is the connection to the Brushfire Records family. This track puts Jack Marton in the same orbit as artists like Mason Jennings, Matt Costa, and Zach Gill. It’s a nod to that easygoing, acoustic sound they’re known for, but without overdoing the name drops. Jack’s carving out his own space in that world, and this song is a perfect example of how he’s doing it.

More than anything, Raindrops on the Kitchen Floor is easy listening in the best sense—simple, pure, and full of heart. If you haven’t listened yet, you’re missing out. And the real magic here: the reminder to slow down and find joy in the little things, like the sound of raindrops falling on the kitchen floor.
