Los Angeles based artist/guitarist/producer Juhan Ongbrian has released his third single of 2020, titled Grapefruit. The release is in response to his release of EP Mood Swings late last year.
Rooted in jazz fusion tones, Juhan’s guitar stylings have been compared to the likes of Jeff Beck, but he is a man of many talents – Grapefruit features Juhan on guitar, keys, and production.
“The track serves as a mirror to Juhan’s oscillating
persona, as it is full of organic elements and authenticity in his sounds.”
Grapefruit is an authentic look into the workings of the musical mind of Juhan. This is a track for those who’d like to take a step back from our fast-paced society and take a breath or two. This instrumental most predominately features exquisitely tasty guitar licks floating gently over a smooth, ambient beat.
The guitar work in this track is the high point and quite honestly, it speaks for itself – Juhan writes expressive riffs with depth and complexity while refraining from coming across as flashy. However, the piano solo in the second half of the track shows that he is no slouch on the keys either. The limited instrumentation prevents any overcrowding, and allows the back and forth with each of these instruments to be a strong focal point for the listener. Additionally, the lo-fi aesthetic is present but tastefully executed in that it never detracts from the quality of the music being performed.
Overall, the track presents a fresh take on a modern jazz fusion sound. It’s bright without being punchy, and smooth without being lethargic. Grapefruit is a great introduction to artist Juhan Ongbrian and excites us for more from this young powerhouse.
The guitar stylings of Jeff Beck meets John Mayer if either were a jazz-centric player.
