*** OUR 2017 SINGLE OF THE YEAR! ***
Jesus, this is a really good song. But I’m getting ahead of myself, let me back up a bit…
Magazine Gap Road is a major route in Hong Kong. It was there that two of the members of Magazine Gap grew up. Ironically, however, it wouldn’t be until years later that they would meet in London under the pretense of their respective musical vocations. That serendipitous twist of fate seems to have carried with it a touch of magic as the trio’s chemistry is really quite something. This is evidenced by their growing catalog of finely crafted songs, which blend multiple genre lines into something very much their own. And people, I mean it. Lyrically, musically, the production…it’s all wonderful.
Consisting of James Keen (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars), Alex Ho (piano), Brian McCook (drums & percussion), the group’s latest single, is the lovely, crisp, soulful composition, In Two Minds. Keen’s vocals and story-telling are in a rarely seen, classic vein as he has found a way to delicately articulate his longing for love, as well as the residual heartbreak and confusion he feels over the choices he’s made. This ballad was authentically forged with depth and heart…
“I can plough a lone furrow, but it’s not the same
I’m a runaway scout by any other name
I may be waving from some podium, I may be crowned with a laurel wreath
But these leaves of gold will feel brittle beneath
I have no reason to doubt, to stop or go without
I know it takes all kinds, but it leaves me now
In two minds
In two minds”
Upon further examination of Magazine Gap’s previous material, you will simply find more of the same…and we encourage you to do so.
Whose lovechild…?
If Elton John and Tracy Chapman made a record together, the result would be very Magazine Gap-esque. It would be easy to assume that I’m complimenting Magazine Gap with this comparison, but perhaps it’s the other way around. (Yeah, these guys are good.)
