With the collective number of disappointments we’ve been having as a planet this year, there’s nothing that feels better than taking a little bit of that pent up rage out on something – or someone. Mia Sayoko does this for us in her new release Fuck Ur Birthday. It’s the anthem you didn’t know you needed right now – sarcastic, maybe even a little petty, and totally and completely relatable.
In this track, Mia walks us through all the things she hopes happens to her ex on their birthday – if you hadn’t guessed, she’s not exactly hoping all their wishes come true. It’s one part vengeful and one part blunt – it isn’t ever easy saying goodbye, but it doesn’t have to be friendly either. But despite all of the sardonicism and vitriol, it shows a touch of growth – letting go of things that used to be special after a relationship has ended is the first step to taking back your independence and moving on.
To top it all off, this is an expertly produced track that showcases Mia’s vocals beautifully. It’s ear candy that’s uptempo and fun, but with a little bit of an edge. This song hits in all the right places, and it’s just about as catchy as they come. Stream Fuck Ur Birthday now and enjoy a dose of insolence and retribution, wrapped up in a completely entertaining musical package.
(And hey, maybe we should make this the song we sing on New Year’s Eve this year – fuck the birthday of 2020, amirite?)
