Let’s give a warm Ark of Music welcome to singer/rapper Mitchell Zia! Hailing from Los Angeles, Mitchell lends his exquisite vocals to projects from Pacific Music and a host of other prolific producers. And when he’s not embellishing/uplifting another’s work, he’s creating his own blend of modern, dark and danceable pop/R&B. Having shared his latest single, “accelerating” – a catchy track from his new EP, Supervillain – we had the pleasure to listen, prepare our thoughts, and now, dear reader, present them to you. So, let’s hit play on Mitchell Zia’s “accelerating,” and share the moments that really moved us.
So, what’s it about?
Lyrically, this is a song about someone rather obsessed with, and perhaps overwhelmed by, their attraction to an apparently stunning, worship-worthy romantic interest. The writer seeks to prove his merit, as evidenced by the following excerpt:
“Why you act like you don’t know
Everywhere you go you steal the show
All Versace, glowing head to toe
Singing siren with a voice of gold
Tell me what you want and where to go
Intoxicate me, I’m your Romeo.”
But remember, said writer is rather smitten…
“Everytime I get you close
I’m afraid I’ll overdose
Binge you like a Netflix TV show
Feeling sick, it’s getting colder
Without you, I’m so sober
I’m breaking down in slo-o-o mo.”
Listening, and talking about it…
“accelerating” begins with clean, reverb-drenched electric guitar before dropping into a whispering, throaty rap over a low-bass bounce. But don’t let these darker dramatics fool you; its delivery is juxtaposed by Mitchell’s light and airy singing voice – it’s clean, emotionally and technically nimble; the kind of vocal styling mirroring the very best of today’s popular pop artists.
Transitioning back to that throaty rap – that darker character transition describing both merit and obsession – we get a sense of strobing lights, of a dance floor overstuffed with beat-bouncing bodies, and our narrator singling out the blinding shine of his unattainable interest. The voice is also, at times, robotic, extending final vowels of phrase-ending lyrics with a tasteful splash of autotune; perhaps this implies the narrator’s slavish, robotic commitment to undeniable programming – an incontestable demand/command to be with, to attain, this particularly intoxicating individual. Am I going too deep? Maybe, but maybe not. Our brains simply like what they like – want what they want – and oftentimes, we have absolutely zero say in the matter.
And as quickly as the song began, the beat drops its final focused splash, the recurring electric guitar ceases, and the mic is figuratively dropped.
But is it actually good?
This is why Mitchell Zia is the first choice for multiple songwriters and producers – he has the voice, the versatility, to pull off today’s sweetly sung and devilishly spoken lyrics. He has the talent, the emotional instincts and delivery, to lead the very next viral TikTok trend and top the biggest Spotify playlists. Want to hear the next best thing before becoming the next big thing? Give Mitchell Zia a listen, and prepare to dance, sing, and revel in a little romantic obsession. HIGHLY recommended.
