Currently residing in Brooklyn, NY, Franco-American singer-songwriter Remy de Laroque has an album on the way. Premiering June 2nd, Star Code will be his 6th full-length release. Ahead of the album is the release of the single One Way to Saigon, giving us a comprehensive look into the gentle, unique stylings of this world-folk-based artist.
Bringing to mind melancholy feelings from the start, One Way to Saigon embraces simplicity, and with this simplicity comes clarity. The guitar and gentle rhythms provide a soft and subtle foundation for Remy’s vocals, which are perfectly modern-folk in their light and airy execution. The balanced harmonies in the chorus are straightforward, but that sole additional element draws the listener in even further at the hook, emphasizing the song’s most important moments with uncomplicated clarity.
Lyrically Remy embraces similar concepts, using hyper-specific imagery and phrases to create an entire world in the fewest amount of words possible. There’s a big, sweeping story of love and loss at hand, but it’s the small moments that Remy highlights in his writing that bring realism and believability to the story: “In district 3 our little noodle shop, I held your faces and then we cried a lot.”
For fans of modern folk that lives outside the realm of expectation, the work of Remy de Laroque will no doubt resonate with you. One Way to Saigon is nuanced, delicate, and mesmerizing; an expertly composed track exercising restraint and showcasing minimalism as a storytelling tool. And if this is any indication of the kind of quality we can expect on Star Code, we suspect it will surpass all expectations.
