Ethereal pop-folk fans, ready your ears for the latest release from singer-songwriter Siv Jakobsen. The Norwegian artist was recently preparing to embark on a promotional tour for her upcoming album when the rapidly escalating pandemic canceled events all over the world, Jakobsen’s shows included. The quarantine and isolation that followed left her longing to connect with those she could share her music with, and she turned to the internet to find a way to continue to share her art with her fans.
The newfound importance she found in sharing music during such a time of turbulence and unknowns had a profound impact on her, and she wrote and recorded the album A Temporary Soothing to express the difficulties and challenges she’s faced during this unsettled time in her life. The album is set to release in August of 2020, but she’s released the single A Feeling Felt or a Feeling Made during the lead up to it, and it delivers the exact dose of measured self-reflection and understanding that we could all use a little more of these days.
Jakobsen has mentioned that when writing this track, she struggled with knowing whether she could be a productive artist while happy – and if not, if she was intentionally creating friction within her life to keep herself productive. This kind of candor and genuine introspection is a rare treat, and is even less often executed at the level at which this track performs. A Feeling Felt or a Feeling Made is a deluge of heartfelt poetry over effortless, minimal production. The lyrics take the center stage, and they offer us a truly candid insight into the mind of the artist. In this track, Jakobsen most forwardly tackles her struggles with isolation. It’s stated so beautifully and simply in the hook: “And I wonder if loneliness is a feeling felt or a feeling made”.
We’d guess Jakobsen is not alone in these musings today. In such unprecedented times, A Feeling Felt or a Feeling Made provides us with a moment of respite and asks us to look inside ourselves for the answers – and we’re grateful for it. This single has us looking forward to more illustrious, genuine artistry on the full album.
